Artist Statement
Ever since my childhood, I have looked the act of painting and drawing as a way to build both imaginary and real bridges between my memories of the past and of the future. It is a continuing dialogue with myself as well as with images. I am concerned about forces that disrupt and separate people, cultures and religions. My recent works show a world inflicted by war, terrorism and ethnic unrest. I combine personal memories of disasters and strife with images of more recent global confrontations, inspired by my experiences growing up in and surviving hardships brought on by a modern world of conflict, which include the Holocaust, September 11th, the Columbia space shuttle disaster, and most recently, the environmental damage caused by modern civilizations. I wish to express my shock at these disasters and call attention to the relationships between progress and destruction through painting. My technique combines classical mural painting with the large format of billboard advertising. The medium of collage is also important to me, because I use it to represent the archaeology of individual, intimate feelings.
